How do you see yourself, looking through the eyes of God?
Do you see yourself the way God sees you? How possible is this, you might say, since I don’t know how God sees me. Let’s start by looking at Psalm 139:14 which says, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made”. Let’s take a look at Genesis 1:27, “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them”. Our first self concept must derive its true meaning from the word of God, which tells us, that we are especially created in a distinct or unique way, fashioned after the likeness of God himself. When you see yourself the way God sees you, your perspective about life changes. No one will validate you like God has. You must see yourself through the eyes of God and not the eyes of man. The leaders of Israel made a big mistake when they went to spy out the land. The Lord gave Moses instructions to send one representative leader from every tribe to explore the land of Canaan.
How did Israel see themselves – Grasshopper?
The leaders of Israel were also instructed to see what the land was like and whether the people who live there are strong or weak, few or many. What kind of land the people live in? Is it good or bad? What towns do they live in? Are they unwalled or fortified? How is the soil? Is it fertile or poor? Are there trees on it or not? And to bring back some of the fruits of the land (Numbers 13:18-20).
The men came back with a horrendous report. They told Moses and all of Israel, “The land does flow with milk and honey! BUT the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large (Numbers 13: 27-28).” That’s not the worst of all, they continued, “We seem like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.” Really, if there is anything that infuriates God is gross unbelief, doubt and complaining. How about you? Do you seem like a grasshopper against your comparisons? I’m sure you may have felt like that before.
Developing a positive self-image about yourself?
It is not what people think about you that really matters, but what you think or say about yourself. People will always have their opinion of you, regardless of how you act. Think positive about yourself, create your own positive self-image of who you are and who you want to be. Norman Peale in his book “The amazing results of positive thinking’ mentions, Thomas Carlyle’s work that speaks clearly of the ways one thinks and acts in response to life’s changes and challenges. According to his view, life ask of each of us, “Will you be a hero , or will you be a coward?” “Will you be tough-minded or tender minded?” Like Norman I agree, “The positive thinker will believe in himself, in life, in humanity and in God. He knows his own capacity, and his own ability. He is undaunted and invincible. He will draw the best from whatever comes.” Your positive self-image emerges from God’s likeness and image from which you and I were formed wonderfully and fearfully.
How about that grasshopper mentality?
What you say about yourself, depends on how you see yourself. Israel’s defeat did not come because of how their enemies saw them, but how they saw themselves. Don’t make the same mistake. It is not your friends or family’s job to have a positive image of you it’s your job. If you think that you are stupid then, your life may speak the same. This is something the Lord has been dealing with me on in a very strong way. To never see myself in other people’s eyes or perception of me, but to see myself and speak the same, the way he sees me and declare who I am, the way he does. If you let people define, you will have a very poor image of yourself. They are not your Creator!

How do you see yourself when you look into the mirror?
Normally when you look into the mirror, you see an image of yourself looking back at you and not everyone like what’s looking back at them. However, when you look into the mirror of the word, you will love what’s looking back at you, because God’s mirror always reveal a beautiful image. Find out what the word has to say about you and the one who created you. You actually look like him, even while you may not feel like it, physically look like it, or even act like it, you look like your Creator (Gen 1:27). In fact you are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). There is absolutely none like you out there, you are not a cheap replica of someone else. God made you so unique, go out there and shine, make your mark in the earth. Accomplish what God says you can accomplish.
Never allow people’s opinion of you stop you from being the amazing you, God created you to be. If you don’t like something about yourself, change it or make it better. But just be happy with the redeemed you that Christ has formed. Be happy with yourself, life is too short to worry about other people’s opinion. You might not be where you want to be but, be thankful for where you are right now it could be much worse.
Daily, breath in the life of God and breath out his goodness to others.
Open your mouth and declare who you are in Christ: I am blessed, my life produces excellence, integrity, honesty, holiness, generosity, vision, wisdom, health, faith and love. Live life happy, on purpose and walk in God confidence.
Be blessed.
